The ancient world, the golden days of Before, came to an end with the Great Cataclysm. Black fire raining from the skies engulfed the planet, the earth opened, and the seas flowed over the land. The cities of Light erected by the ancients turned to dust, and the world was plunged into everlasting darkness. And when the divine wrath ceased afflicting our world, the Initiates who had been spared by the Sun God arose amid the chaos. Guided by their faith, they set off in search of a land free of the Black Shroud, a land where life could once again spring forth. They were the "Wanderers"-men and women in search of light and hope amid the perils of the Darklands. Their journey lasted many, many moons, until the glorious day when the fathers of our fathers' fathers finally ceased their wandering. They discovered a land blessed by the Light of the Sun God, a Stallite. There they built a city and erected a Temple in honor of the Father of Light. They called it Sparta. Today, a terrible danger threatens Sparta. The future of the entire city lies in the hands of a single man.
Arkhan of Sparta
Dark Earth is the story of Arkhan, a young man of Stallite Sparta. Although born to the Sunseers, the highest caste of the cityÆs ruling theocracy, Arkhan is a regular guy. His main interests are exploring the Stallite and meeting interesting people. He has never shown the slightest interest in religion, prayer, ancient mysteries, or anything that requires study. (In fact, ArkhanÆs a bit lazy and somewhat of an underachiever.) With complete disregard for his religion, Arkhan has fallen in love with Kalhi, a woman of the lowest caste, the Scavengers. ArkhanÆs father, Rylsadhar, decides that his son is not meant to be a Sunseer, and agrees to let Arkhan join the Company of the Guardians of Fire.
Arkhan's Quest
Once enlisted, however, Arkhan finds his duties a chore. He is young and wants to live a little. He has to sneak his girlfriend into the barracks to even have a moment together and every morning he has to be on guard duty with the rising of the sun. During any free time he is supposed to be training...needless to say he is often late. On this particular morning, Arkhan was late and is summoned by his superior, provost Dhorkan. He is reprimanded and ordered to report for guard duty at the Great Temple of the Sun. In the Temple, where The Council Sunseers is meeting, Arkhan stumbles onto a treacherous plot. A plot that threatens to blot out the Light, leaving only Darkness. As Arkhan struggles with an intruder, he is exposed to...something. Whatever the substance is, it causes painful, hideous transformations. In a race against time, Arkhan must find an antidote. But, this is not a simplistic black and white adventure. It is a quest with both physical and psychological dimensions. Little by little, Arkhan comes to recognize his true friends and his real enemies. His fate seems somehow entangled with that of Stallite Sparta and its mysteries. Faced with trials, tests, and ordeals, Arkhan must decide whether to don a heroÆs mantle or not. In the process, he must struggle with his own heart of darkness. And, finally, learn something about the mysteries of Dark Earth. Is Arkhan really a match for the task? The outcome is up to you.
